The National Society for Mentally and Emotionally Handicapped Children was founded in 1979 by a few like-minded people including psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and members of the community. The aim was to advocate the rights of children with intellectual disabilities and to provide educational, vocational and rehabilitation services for them.
The first project of the society was the establishment of the Special Education and Training Centre in Lahore in 1981, which is continuing to provide extensive services for those with intellectual disability. Other projects have also been set up to provide health and educational services to underprivileged children in the local community. The Society also serves as a resource centre, providing teacher training, public awareness seminars and academic workshops and conferences
